LOCAL FINNSHEEP WOOL
Lapuan Kankurit is taking finnsheep wool development to a new level by investing in their own wool finishing and spinning operations while also taking responsibility for transferring knowledge to future generations.
Lapuan Kankurit is building not just one but two new production facilities in Lapua, Finland. In addition to the Finnsheep wool weaving and finishing line, a wool spinning mill will also be established in the future.
"Having our own spinning mill allows us to engage in entirely new product development with Finnsheep wool. It also holds value that, in the future, we can show, for example, young students the entire production chain of woolen products in our own premises, from sheared wool to the finished product. Wool washing takes place in UK."
Sustaining and developing Finnish textile traditions has always been an important value for Lapuan Kankurit, known for its design products. The project is also strongly motivated by the fact that, until now, up to half of Finnish wool has gone to waste.
New Life for Suupohjan Kehruutehdas' machinery
Lapuan Kankurit acquired the carded wool yarn machines from Suupohjan Kehruutehdas in Teuva, which had been inactive for years. The machines are being serviced and modernized to meet contemporary safety standards. These machines are the right size for Lapuan Kankurit's needs for Finnish lamb's wool. With Lapuan Kankurit's modern weaving mill using approximately 130,000 kilograms of various yarns annually, the initial use of Finnish lamb's wool will be up to 10.000 kilograms per year. The company sources Finnish wool directly from local farms and weaves it into interior products in Lapua.
The new finishing facility was completed in the spring of 2023, and Lapuan Kankurit introduced the first products woven from their own finnsheep wool products for sale in the autumn of 2023.
